Early Growth

Adwest is Founded

Adwest Engineering is established in Reading, Berkshire, to focus on advanced steering technology and mass production.

1950s-70s

The Varamatic Era

Adwest pioneers the Varamatic variable-ratio steering box, fitted to icons such as Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover.

1980s-90s

Export Success

Adwest steering gears gain worldwide recognition, with exports supporting OEM programmes in Europe, North America and Asia.

1990s

Magal Acquisition

Adwest becomes part of Magal Engineering, continuing production in the UK while expanding to overseas markets.

2015

End of Defender Production

The final UK-built Land Rover Defender leaves the Solihull line, marking the end of an era for Adwest steering boxes in continuous OE supply.

2016

Last Defender Steering Gear

The final Defender steering gear is assembled at the Magal factory, closing a 70-year run of supply.

2020

UK Facility Closure

Adwest’s successor operations under Magal, Arlington and TMS shut down UK manufacturing, ending local production.

2025

The Revival

BAM Engineering acquires the original Adwest tooling, drawings and supplier base, reviving Genuine OE-quality steering boxes for heritage and specialist applications.
