Quick ratio steering gears for the pre-2016 Land Rover Defender are rare.
Originally produced in very limited numbers, these gears provide a faster steering response than standard Defender steering boxes. They are typically sought for specialist builds, competition vehicles, and applications where a more direct steering feel is required.

What is a quick ratio steering gear?
A quick ratio steering gear reduces the number of steering wheel turns required from lock to lock.
In practical terms, that means:
- Faster steering response
- Less steering input for the same road wheel movement
- A more direct steering feel compared to a standard Defender steering box
These gears use different internal geometry and components. They are not a cosmetic or bolt-on upgrade and must be built and verified correctly to remain safe.
Why are they difficult to source?
Quick ratio Defender steering gears were never produced in high volume.
Over time, many have been lost to wear, incorrect repair, or non-OE reconditioning. Surviving units are limited, and provenance matters. Unlike standard steering boxes, they cannot be reliably recreated from mixed or unknown components.

Any work involving quick ratio units would follow the same principles as our standard reconditioning:
- Original Adwest cores only
- Full strip-down and inspection
- OE-specification components and processes
- Verification against original test specifications
Availability will always be limited, and suitability must be confirmed on a case-by-case basis.
