Diagnosing Steering Box Symptoms
A handful of symptoms account for most of the steering boxes we're asked to look at. Here's what we've actually found causing them, and why the honest answer for some is that we don't guess, we inspect.
Fluid leak: the seal, not the compound, matters
A leaking steering box has usually already been "fixed" once. On a genuine unit we stripped down, a previous repair had been sealed with a hardened compound rather than the correct seals. The unit could pass a quick test, but a compound is not a seal — it does not reseal properly once disturbed, so the leak returns.
We have documented the same pattern independently on a third-party remanufactured unit: a hardened, unidentified sealing compound on the output pressure seal, and an incorrect, non-OE seal at the cover plate. It held pressure on the bench. It still leaked once disturbed. On a real customer unit inspected under Adwest Verified, the external leak was traced to exactly this cause — an incorrect, non-genuine seal fitted at the cover plate, and it was recorded as not acceptable.
This is why we replace seals with correct OE-spec parts as a matter of course, rather than reusing a seal that still looks intact or relying on compound to hold a repair together.
Excess play and steering drift: the sector shaft
A worn sector shaft shows up as lost motion on-centre — the small dead area where the steering feels vague before the wheels respond. On a Defender, that reads as wandering and constant correction rather than a single obvious fault.
We have seen this fail inspection on a real customer unit: the sector shaft was recorded with excess play, with the end of the shaft turned down and a substance attached — not acceptable, and replaced as part of the rebuild. Excess play and drift are usually the same underlying fault reported two different ways, which is why both point us to the same component first.
Heavy steering: assistance lost in the valve
Heavy steering points to the input shaft and rotary valve, the part of the box that controls hydraulic assistance. We assess its sealing surfaces and valve condition specifically for leaks and lost assistance on every unit that comes in. We are not going to pretend this is the only possible cause — it is the one component in this assembly we can evidence a link to, so it is where inspection starts.
Vibration, knocking, poor centring and stiffness: assessed, not assumed
Vibration through the steering, knocking or clunking, a box that doesn't self-centre, and intermittent stiffness are all things we are asked about regularly. We're not going to invent a single tidy cause for each of these here, because on a strip-down the real cause has turned out to be different things on different units — a bearing, a shaft, a seal, or a combination.
What we can tell you is what inspection actually checks: bearings for wear, and the sector shaft, worm, piston and valve for cracks, as part of every reconditioning. The housing, sector shaft, valve assembly, piston, seals and bearings are each assessed individually, not assumed good because the unit still turns. That is a longer answer than naming one part, but it is the honest one for these four symptoms.
Diagnosed by inspection, not assumption
None of the faults above stopped a unit passing a functional test on the bench. Reduced seal engagement, reused seals and hidden wear don't usually cause immediate failure — they shorten service life, and the failure they eventually produce on a steering box is not a convenient one.
